Steven Spielberg’s haunting and complex portrayal of America’s 16th President. Working again with Production Designer Rick Carter, he tasked me to explore under the surface of this part of American history. Meaning, investigate the intimate and troubling life of Abraham Lincoln, not just what we know of the Civil War, but of his tragic home and family life. How might that be portrayed in imagery? By taking a more personal approach to the look of the film, we leaned in on dark shadows, negative space, and the use of texture as a metaphor for his life of friction and conflict. J.M.W Turner, the 18th Century English painter was also an influence on our work.
